MENTORING

Our mentoring programme is designed to improve the academic and life chances for young people signposted as having social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Each mentor we provide will serve your school as a trusted role model, offering opportunities to achieve agreed goals and objectives. We will invest in every mentee by providing tailored strategies designed to equip them to overcome and manage their challenges. This will help them to make wise choices and act on them in order to produce desired outcomes including avoiding the possibility of exclusion.

Wisegate develops tailored strategies focusing on uncovering and addressing specific obstacles faced by the mentee that limit their optimum academic performance. These objectives are best achieved in relationships involving learning, openness, dialogue and challenge. Our Mentors will journey with their Mentees as they overcome the obstacles of low self-esteem and self-confidence, along with the absence of defined ambitions and vocational goals, which can act as considerable barriers to their academic progress.

We offer one to one mentoring sessions which last for 60 minutes during term time. As part of our service we will liaise and consult with key Teaching and Managerial staff to ensure the mentees current academic, social and emotional needs are addressed. Studies have shown that long term mentoring relationships offer the best possibility of achieving positive outcomes. In light of this our programmes run for at least a year during term time only.

Example Of Mentoring Structure.

Our holistic approach is designed to motivate the mentee to follow the school’s curriculum and achieve the relevant qualifications by engaging with their vocational goals and desires. This goal will inform the content of the weekly mentoring sessions. These sessions may take the form of the following structure, which was designed for the specific needs of an Alternative Educational Establishment in Thurrock:

To befriend the young person and begin the process to developing a trusted relationship.
To uncover a significant skill, interest and ambition that can form the basis of an achievable vocation with a clearly defined career path. This is to be achieved in agreement with the young person and as a primary result of his/her input.
To ensure the young person agrees to pursue the goal of a desired vocation and career path.
To identify potential personal and social stumbling blocks to achieving this goal. I aim to gain the young person’s agreement to address them and pursue solutions.
To effectively link the pursuit of their vocational goals to appropriate behaviour and the achievement of academic qualifications.

Measurable Outcomes

At Wisegate we strive to ensure the service we provide is transparent with proven measurable outcomes. To this end we will update you with reviews and reports to highlight the effectiveness of our counselling and mentoring service.

We use CORE (YP CORE) which is an assessment tool developed for use in schools and youth counselling services. This tool has been widely used throughout services for both adults and young people for many years, and is the least intrusive and easily utilised measurement tool available for use in schools.

YP CORE helps us measure young people’s level of risk, and change in their school and home life, both in terms of behaviour and attitudes towards themselves and others.

We also use CORE End of Therapy Form to chart the young person’s pathway through and out of therapy, alongside a range of subjective outcome assessments.
